We cannot talk about federal health care reform and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) without addressing Medicaid.
Medicaid Expansion was signed into law in May of this year by Governor Hickenlooper and made possible by the ACA. It includes a new group of Medicaid-eligible adults. Because of the Expansion, the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing (HCPF) estimates an additional 160,000 Coloradans will have Medicaid coverage beginning January 1, 2014.
Do I qualify?
This income guideline will help answer that question. It is based on 2013 Federal Poverty Levels.
Any U.S. citizen or legally present adult with no dependent children, who is also a Colorado resident earning:
• $15,856 or less (1 person household)
• $21,404 or less (2 person household)
• $26,951 or less (3 person household)
• $32,499 or less (4 person household)
Will my providers take Medicaid?
If you think you might be eligible for Medicaid, call your doctors’ offices and ask if they accept Medicaid. The providers at the Beacon Clinic of Infectious Disease (BCID), Boulder Community Hospital (BCH), and Denver Infectious Disease Consultants (DIDC) all take Medicaid.
How does it impact BCAP clients?
BCAP expects to see a jump in the number of BCAP clients enrolled in Medicaid on January 1, 2014: from 15 current Medicaid clients to about 75! Most of these will be BCAP clients coming off of HMAP (HIV Medication Assistance Program) and CICP (Colorado Indigent Care Program). As Medicaid Expansion rolls out, BCAP is ready to answer your questions, assist with Medicaid enrollment, and help guide people through the Medicaid system.
What does the future hold?
We hope to show you a comparison of HMAP and CICP coverage alongside Medicaid coverage. To show you the picture as it truly stands: that Medicaid is a comprehensive insurance plan and better coverage than the HMAP and CICP combo. And, as mentioned in last week’s post – the Colorado AIDS Drug Assistance Program is planning a new program to help pay for your Medicaid costs.
